Not only is she not an Asian woman, she’s basically the embodiment of yellow fever. “Oh hey this white lady character needs to be spiced up, so let’s stick her in the body of a stereotypical asian ninja!” And then people justify not fixing this racist clusterfuck in the name of “diversity” and I’m like, “I don’t think that word means what you think it means. At all. In fact this thing you’re doing here is basically the opposite of what it means.”

I get that the character of Betsy Braddock is likeable and nuanced, and I don’t begrudge people for being fond of her, but I find the trappings around her character so off-putting that I have avoided comics in the past specifically because I don’t want to deal with the whole awful mess.

ETA: also as an Asian American it really annoys me that Psylocke is one of the first names you hear whenever people discuss Asian/Asian-descent superheroes. She’s not Asian! She doesn’t represent me! She draws attention away from Asian characters who are actually, you know, not mind-bogglingly offensive just by existing!

So I saw SWATH yesterday

And here is the obligatory reaction post!

Things I didn’t like:

• there is kind of something inherently problematic about having a character whose beauty partially comes from how PALE-SKINNED she is
• like
• really
• really

• because it enforces that whole pale=beautiful and dark=ugly
• WHERE DO YOU THINK PRODUCTS LIKE FAIR AND LOVELY COME FROM
• FROM STUFF LIKE THIS
• plus there was the whole evil-queen-uses-beauty-as-a-weapon
• and Snow White’s greatest weapon is her PURITY111111!
• how about no
• that carries a fuckton of unfortunate implications about acceptable ways of being feminine
• like I am glad there wasn’t any actual femmephobia, but it definitely set up the virgin/whore dichotomy like whoa and NOPE NOPE NOPE NOT OKAY
• also there was like one PoC in the ENTIRE FILM WOW and she didn’t even have any lines and was on camera for about thirty seconds total
• and it was sort of set in Unnamed Medieval European country because there was the Church etc
• but they really had no reason to do that
• at all
• I was actually kind of hoping that the Huntsman would go in for like a gentle forehead kiss or something because there’s just something kind of creepy about kissing a dead person on the lips. But he didn’t. But it was just like a peck, so it wasn’t as bad as it might have been.
• They played a lot of the dwarves for comedy in scenes that would otherwise have been serious, and even though they were supposed to be dwarves as in the species/race/what-have-you, it reeked a little bit too much of hah-hah-these-guys-with-acondroplasia-are-hilarious-hah for me to be comfortable with it.

That said, here, have all the things I DID like:

• Kristen Stewart. Was really, really good! She did that accent pretty well, she did that holy-shit-I-am-being-crowned-queen-HOW-DO-YOU-QUEEN-OH-GOD-look-cool expression really well, pulled off pretty much everything, and
• there’s that scene where she’s whacking people with her sword
• and I say whacking because she was literally using it like you would use a stick to beat somebody with
• I’m glad she showed Snow White is not just suddenly really good at fighting
• CHARLIZE THERON
• CHARLIZE

• She was amazing as Ravenna. Excellent.
• STOLE THE MOVIE
• Chris Hemsworth as the Huntsman was PERF

• that scene in the Dark Forest with the troll where Snow White is all “think fast think fast AHA I WILL SPEAK IT’S LANGUAGE” and then just sort of screams in its face
• You get the distinct impression that William’s obsession with finding Snow White is kind of unhealthy and that he doesn’t really know her or try to get to know her, he just sort of projects the fantasy-version of her he constructed onto her
• which is why that kiss doesn’t work

• WHY DID YOU HAVE TO DIIIIIE
• (I know why it’s because they made us care about you)

• The mirrors, both of them.
• How the move the Huntsman teaches Snow White near the beginning of the movie is the move that ultimately both saves her life and wins their victory
• And how it was three drops of blood when the eternal-beauty potion/spell/thing was cast and how it was three drops of blood when Ravenna finally dies
• In the same pattern, even!
• THE COSTUMES
• THE SCENERY
• THE SPECIAL EFFECTS
• THE SOUNDTRACK

Plot holes I noticed:

• so at the beginning, the Hunstman is narrating, or…?
• are the fairies inside the magpies that lead her places the whole time?
• where the hell did that horse come from? Was it Whitehart in another form or something?
• so…there are real monsters in the dark forest and then there are fake monsters
• and the difference is
• some of them are only products of like those undersea-plant-y things that hiss gas
• and the troll is real, but not the tree thing or the dementor-things, yes?
• Yes
• how old exactly is Ravenna, and if she’s lived that long, how is she keeping her brother alive?
• is that why they’re connected?
• how come Gretta got to be young again?
• why are the dwarves part of the court but not the Hunstman? Because they were about equal in importance to her whole journey, sooo….?

If you want to be a doctor and there is even ONE possible scenario where you will not be willing or will refuse to treat a patient, then you need to find a new fucking career aspiration because people like you do not deserve the privilege of healing people.

Every patient deserves the standard of care and if you aren’t willing to treat EVERY patient with the standard of care under EVERY possible scenario then you are not prepared to be a physician.

That includes drug users. That includes drunk patients who killed a family of four in a car crash. That includes patients who want emergency contraception after their rapes. That includes patients who may have mental health issues. That includes patients of all religions, races, and cultures. And it includes patients of all sexualities and genders.

If you aren’t willing to treat EVERY patient, then get the fuck out of the health care system. Immediately.
